Be sure to
use plenty of Ultrasound Gel, and make sure to cover the entire
surface of the probe with gel. If you run out of gel you can either
order more from us, or experiment with body lotion (some provide
better sound quality than others).
When you place
the probe onto your skin, try to push out any air bubbles that
are in the gel, air bubbles will cause extra static.
Early in pregnancy
(10-12 weeks) it may be helpful to have a full bladder.
Early in pregnancy
(10-12 weeks) it is best to start in line with the belly button,
and right above the pubic hairline. As your baby grows, you will
need to slowly move the probe higher in order to locate your baby's
heartbeat. However, you will never find the heartbeat higher than
your belly button.
It is helpful
to apply slight pressure and tilt the probe slightly to help pick
up sounds in a wider area. Think of the probe as a flashlight
with a beam coming out of the end, if you tilt the probe you will
pick up a wider area with the beam and increase your success rate.
Move the probe
very slowly (1/2 inch movements) to avoid skipping over the heartbeat.
With twins
it is often difficult to distinguish between your different babies
(doctors even have a difficult time). If you have the Dynamic
Doppler Standard Unit you can count the heartbeat for 10 seconds
and multiply that number by 6 to get the beats per minute. This
method can sometimes help to distinguish between multiple babies
and also help to distinguish between your baby's heartbeat and
your own heartbeat. With the Dynamic Doppler Display unit the
heart rate will be displayed on the digital L.C.D. Display.
With either
unit, your heart rate will vary between 60-90 beats per minute
and your baby's will be between 120-180 beats per minute. As your
baby grows, it's heart rate will gradually slow. Just like us,
depending on how active your baby is, the heart rate will change
from time to time.
On the Dynamic
Doppler Standard Unit, if the power light flashes, the 9 volt
alkaline battery needs to be replaced. On the Dynamic Doppler
Digital Display Unit, if the heart rate display flashes, you will
need to change the 9 volt alkaline battery.
